What if I'm scared of pain during a dental procedure?

It is a totally valid fear and concern, and it's something we're going to address today. I get that question a lot from patients, and there are so many different ways we can help manage it.

The best thing is that when I am speaking with a patient, I ask questions about their previous experiences and try to understand where that fear is coming from. Then I help address those concerns in various ways, whether it's increasing their comfort or providing a type of anesthesia that helps alleviate or eliminate pain.

A lot of it comes down to reassurance and understanding what may have caused those feelings in the past. My goal is to support you throughout the procedure, provide comfort, and be there with you every step of the way to help ensure that you're not in pain.

What can I do if I have dental anxiety before my appointment?

One of the most important things is communication. When we are discussing a treatment plan or talking about a procedure, it's essential that you communicate your concerns with your dentist.

If you're seeing me, I want to understand where your anxiety is coming from and what it is related to. There are many different ways I can help. I have helped many patients manage dental anxiety, and I can help you as well by tailoring my approach to your specific concerns and comfort level.

Sometimes that means explaining everything step by step and making sure you are fully informed about what is happening. I want you to know what to expect before, during, and after treatment so that there are no surprises.

When patients understand the process and feel involved, it often helps reduce anxiety. The key is communication so that I understand what is causing the anxiety and how we can work together to help you manage it.

What if I haven't been to the dentist in a long time and feel embarrassed?

Here's what I would say: I certainly understand how you might be feeling, but please remember that I went to school to become a dentist because I wanted to help people. My goal is to help you improve your oral health.

There is absolutely no judgment at Smiles By The Sea Family Dentistry, whether you visit the dentist every six months, every few months, or haven't been in many years.

Life happens. We are all human, and there are many reasons why someone may delay dental care. The important thing is that you are taking the first step toward getting healthy.

Please don't be embarrassed. That's what we are here for. We are dentists and healthcare providers, and our job is to help you.

Come talk to me, let me know your goals for your smile and your oral health, and we'll work together to help you achieve them. Making the phone call, scheduling the appointment, and showing up are already steps in the right direction.

What if I have a strong gag reflex during dental treatment?

There are many ways we can help make you comfortable during treatment, so you don't have to worry. There are solutions available, and many patients are surprised by how manageable the experience becomes.

I have treated patients who thought they couldn't even brush their teeth at home because their gag reflex was so strong. During treatment, however, there are different techniques and approaches that can help manage that reflex effectively.

Many patients are amazed afterward and tell me they didn't gag at all during treatment. The most important thing is to communicate your concerns with me so we can find the best way to help you feel comfortable and complete your treatment successfully.

What if I'm afraid of needles during dental treatment?

Many patients are afraid of needles. It's not a fun experience, and nobody wants needles or dental drills in their mouth. It's a completely normal human reaction, and some people experience that fear more strongly than others.

The best thing you can do is communicate that concern with me. Let me know that you're anxious or uncomfortable with needles, and I will help you manage that fear.

One thing that works very well is the numbing gel we use before administering local anesthetic. This helps numb the area beforehand, and many patients tell me they don't even realize they've received the injection.

In fact, I often hear patients ask afterward, "Did you already give me the shot?" because they didn't feel it. The key is simply letting me know about your concerns so I can help make the experience as comfortable as possible.

What if I'm worried something will go wrong during treatment?

With today's advanced dental technology, diagnostic tools, and treatment planning methods, situations like that are uncommon.

When I create your treatment plan, I will thoroughly explain the procedure, what we are going to do, and what you can expect. If there are any potential complications or alternate outcomes that I think you should be aware of, I will discuss those with you beforehand so that you are fully informed and prepared.

I want you to go into treatment knowing exactly what to expect. Modern dentistry allows us to diagnose and plan treatment with a high degree of accuracy, and we use advanced technology and precise techniques to help ensure successful outcomes.

Because of that preparation and technology, concerns like these are rare, and there is no need to worry unnecessarily.
